The Night World Series

Image
Hey everyone, another series for you today. This was one of the first series I read when I was getting into reading, and it is by my favourite author L. J. Smith, so it had everything I needed in a book. There are three large books like this, and each book has three different stories in them. Each story has new characters, but often characters will run into other stories, which is nice because it shows where they go after their own stories are over. The 'Night World' is a world hidden within our society. It is made up of a few groups of paranormal creatures; Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, and Shifters. Each of these have their own classes, and they have the choice of joining two circles, one of 'generally good' and one of 'generally bad', but either way the rules stand that humans never learn of their existence, and they remain a secret.  But there is another circle, Circle Daybreak, that believes in letting humans know about the existence of the Nigh...

The Infernal Devices Trilogy

Image
Hey everyone, so this week I will be doing a review on another series, instead of a single book. You might be seeing a lot of these in the next little while depending on how things go, because some people don't want to get into a series and realize they don't want to keep reading, and therefore the book is kind of ruined. This doesn't happen to everybody, but anyone who reads as much as I do would run into it once or twice. So this week I thought I would do the run off of a classic 'Clockwork Angel', the prequel to the Mortal Instruments novels that have recently become a popular movie series as well. Now, I don't personally think you need to read the first novels to understand what is happening in this one, but it certainly makes it easier to understand, and there are a lot more 'AHA!' moments if you do. Meet Tessa, who is moving to England to find her brother who disappeared recently and has sent her a letter instructing her to come to meet him. ...

The House of Night (Whole Series) by P.C Cast

Image
Hello again everyone! Many years ago I started reading Marked, the first book in the house of night series because an old friend of mine asked me to check it out for her. I already knew everything that was going to happen in the book before I was starting it, but I still went for it non-the-less. This review is not only for the first book, even though that is all I am going to give the description for to avoid massive spoilers, but the entire series that I had read before giving up.  Meet Zoe who has just been marked. If you are wondering what it mean to be 'marked' it is when you are chosen to become a vampire and a crescent moon appears on your forehead meaning you have to go study at the Tesla House of Night until you either become a full vampire or you die. It's pretty straight forward. But Zoe is different than the others because her moon is filled in, which shouldn't happen until you become a full vampire. This is her story of trying to adjust to vampire ...

Breath in the Dark by Jane Hersey

Image
Hey everyone, this week I read Breath in the dark. This was yet another book sent to me by the lovely author and GoodReads.com for review on, and it was an adventure from start to finish. I think I cried a lot while reading this book, not because it hit close to home, but because it was truly a sad story, and was so well written that at times it brought me to tears. The story follows a little six year old girl as she struggles through poverty to care for her sick mother. She wears the same dress every day, does not know how to use the bathroom, and walks for miles every day to beg the doctor for the pills that keep her mother alive. Time and time again her mother is admitted to the Hospital to be cared for, and the little girl is taken to homes where they try to discipline her to no avail. But in the end, all she wants is to be by her mothers side to make sure she is always ok. She is allowed to go back to take care of her mother, but life never gets any easier for this ...

No Surrender Soldier by Christine Kohler

Image
Hey everyone, just finished reading No Surrender Soldier, which was sent to me by the very generous author, and Goodreads.com. It has taken me a while to read it because of school and other things, but I have finally gotten the chance to read it, and it is about time to tell you about it. (you all have waited long enough for a new review) Meet Kiko, who's brother Sammy is off fighting in the war of Vietnam, in the year 1972 (i think). His Tatan (grandfather) is suffering from delusions from the second world war, and at one point attacks someone in their tourist shop, accusing him of 'raping' Kiko's mother. During the course of the story you see the point of view of Seto, a soldier from World War 2 who has been hiding out in a cave since the war, and is convinced that the war is still going on, and that he is in danger. As time goes on Kiko tries to come to terms with his Tatan's crazy behaviour, deal with his brother being away in war and not knowing how he is...

Week Update

Hey everyone, I haven't had a lot of chances to read this week, but I have a lot of books on the go so hopefully I will have them all done for next week. I hope everyone is taking advantage of their local libraries and getting involved in the reading community online and in your work/school environment. Take care and have a good week. - K

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Image
Good day to you, my fellow readers. I have just been informed that there is a possibility that this book, Paranormalcy, will be being made into a movie. So, in light of the good news, I thought I would give a review to the book, even though I read it a year or two ago. I loved the book, and I loved the cover, and best of all, it is a trilogy, my favourite! Evie is your everyday teenager living in a secret lab that deals with Paranormals. What are Paranormals you might ask? Well, a paranormal are anything from vampires to ghosts, to anything that isn't classified as 'human'. This lab hunts down rogue paranormals and 'tags' them, and then gives them jobs where they can live their lives and not have to pose a danger to the humans. Now, Evie is basically human, but she is special in a few ways. One, she can see past the glamour of paranormals and can see what they really are when they are trying to hide. Two, she seems to have captured the attention of one of the ...
