Hollowland by Amanda Hocking

Image
Hey everyone, I hope you had a great weekend. This week I started reading a book called UFO Files that I found at the bookstore for $2. But one thing I find about this book, which I haven't finished reading yet, is that it really makes me want to read other books. It's not that the book isn't good (it's alright) but there is something about the themes it talks about that makes me want to read a book with that theme. So because of that I ended up finding this book. Amanda Hocking has a long history of writing books for the teen audience. I first ran into her books when I read her Switched at Birth trilogy, which I don't think I did a review for on this blog. Since I recognized her I thought I would give this book a shot. The description of the book was very basic. It has the classic "girl in a zombie apocalypse trying to find someone she loves" feel. And there is something about a book set in the 'after apocalypse' centred around the apocalypse...

Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Hey everyone. I hope you are having a good Monday. This week I read a book that has been on my reading list for over a year. I had heard from many people over the year that this was a book that was worth reading. And I have to say, they were right. I will say, after reading it, that the first little bit was boring. A few times I found myself questioning what was really interesting in the read. But as I went on I realized that even though nothing huge was going on the story itself was still interesting. Many of you may know that I love a good apocalypse story. This was an end of the world story that doesn't involve zombies, viruses, or anything unnatural. It was just the survival story of a family in a very bad situation. But let me tell you a bit about it: Everyone in town is talking about the asteroid that is going to hit the moon. Miranda has been listening to it for weeks. No one thinks anything of it because scientists don't seem to be worrying at all. On the night ...

The Enemy by Charlie Higson

When I was in high school two of my friends were very into this series and I used to hear them talk about it all the time. At the time I was interested in a different sort of books so I never thought about reading them until now, when I was in the need of some well rated popular books. I loved the idea of everyone older than 14 being a danger to society. Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago I read Quarantine where anyone in their teen years was the danger to the adults. This contrast works greatly when read back to back because you get to see two complete opposites of the same sort of story. Big difference with this books than most I read, it is set in London, England instead of the USA. It's a great change in my opinion. In the US it is much easier to get guns than it is in England (so I have been told) so the children had to actually be creative in finding ways to fight off the adults and defend themselves. I would have liked the have read more about the story star...

Z- Minus by Perrin Briar

Hey everyone I hope you are having a good Monday. A few weeks ago someone reached out to me about downloading this book from Kobo or Amazon since it was free. I figured, since it was a free book, I didn't have much to lose. I checked out some of the other ratings for this book, as I normally do to get a few different opinions before forming my own, and it didn't look promising. While I always look at the lowest and highest review for the differing opinions I found it hard to find a good review. For my own opinion I tried not to think too much about the negative things I read. The author didn't have the strongest voice and I had a problem with the dialogue since it wasn't very realistic. The story itself had promise but I found it was just another take on a popular topic. Since Zombies have become such a popular part of our culture I find an author has to have a very unique new way of presenting them to catch anyone attention in a big way. But let me tell you what I...

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all having a wonderful morning. Spring is coming, which means the weather is finally starting to warm up a bit here in the frozen north. Nothing gets me into the reading mood more than a little spring fever. Now this book has been on my shelf quite literally since last year and still smells like the bathroom floor in my old dorm room. Since I have run out of books to read I decided it was time to stop being picky about what I was reading and get through the books I started a year ago. I had no expectations for this book because in the year since I bought it I had forgotten what it was about. I long since lost the paper cover for it so unless I wanted to look online for the description (which I didn't) I was reading blind. In the end that was probably a good thing. Alina lives in a post apocalyptic world where unless you are born a powerful Grisha, a warrior with magical abilities, you are nobody. With her childhood friend Mal she is read...

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Image
Good morning everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I am on a path it seems writing reviews for books that have become and/or are becoming movies. I never really watch the movies so I can't give a proper comparison for both but I can  give you a proper review for the book. I literally knew nothing of this book going into it so I didn't have hopes for it to be anything besides another teen book. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the first half of the book. Let me tell you a bit about it: Cassie lives an awful life as far as she is concerned. An alien race she calls the 'Others' have come to Earth and killed off almost all of humanity in a series of 4 waves. The 1st wave knocked out all electronic devices including cars, killing only a few hundred thousand people world wide. The 2nd wave sent a tsunami that killed everyone living in coastal cities. The 3rd wave was a disease that wiped out 90% of Earth's population leaving only those who were na...

Top 5: Amazon Buys (books)

1. Kitty Hawk: This whole series has been such a great discovery for me. Growing up I loved Nancy Drew and this book has offered me the same girl packaged in a Canadian Goose jacket. Not only is every book set in a different location around the world but the author has done so much research that I wouldn't even be able to tell if he hadn't been there himself. 2. Under a Broken Sky: Post apocalypse at its best here with a scientific undertone. See how different groups react to the new world through the eyes of a man who is no hero by any standpoint. Start riots, steal whenever you cat, and watch out for the funnies. This book kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. 3. The Secret Apocalypse: First book free on Kobo and other e-readers. Imagine the zombie apocalypse. Now imagine it on an island. Now imagine it in Australia where the entire island has been sealed off from the world and no one outside the island knows what is going on. Follow one girl as she fights to ...

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Image
Hello everyone, I hope you are having a good day. This week I read the Maze Runner, a popular book that has been made into a movie. To be honest this book has been on my shelf for over a year now and I have just not been in the mood to read it. I finally decided in an act of desperation to read it. Now that I have read it I can say that I am happy that I did. I love post apocalypse books and I love it when they have a thriller/horror sense to them. This book had all of that put together. Let me tell you a bit about the book: Thomas wakes up in a strange machine knowing nothing else besides his name. When he comes out of the box he is in he is surrounded by a couple dozen other boys all around his age (which he isn't sure how old he is to begin with). The boys don't seem surprised to see him and they try to help him cope with where he is. Though they refuse to tell him where he is or how he got there he begins to discover things on his own. This is what he learns: 1. A...

Full Story Synopsis: The Giver

SPOILER ALERT! The Giver There is a society where people live a very different life than us. When the time comes for Jonas to have his job assigned he is skipped over at the ceremony. Under a Broken Sun by Kevin Sheridan

Good morning everyone and happy Monday. A couple weeks ago I won this book through the Goodreads.com giveaway and was mailed a copy by the author. There was a note inside that he had written which was a great indication that he had a great sense of humour. As many of you might have noticed I am a huge fan of the apocalypse and post-apocalyptic society types of books whether they be zombies or natural disasters. So I was ecstatic when I found out I had won a copy of this book.  Let me tell you a bit about the book: Adam Dawson is the son of a famous astrophysicist who works for the President of the United States. He is coming back from a trip abroad when he gets a frantic phone call from his dad telling him that the end of the world as he knows it is coming and that he has to find him in Chicago as soon as possible. Not 15 minutes later all electronic devices fail. This might not have been such a big concern to Adam if he didn't happen to be in the middle...

Ashfall by Mike Mullin

Image
Hey everyone, K here. Just finished reading Ashfall as you can see by the picture above. It was my selected book from this week and the first thing I bought with the mass amounts of gift cards I got at Christmas time. It took me a while to be able to buy it, due to some problems, but now I have it, and it was quite an amazing read. There is action right from the start that continues right until the end. In such a short amount of time so many things change to the point where it is almost amazing our hero survives! So let me explain this out for you. Here we have Alex, who has been left behind after a fight with his mother before the family leaves to head up to stay with their uncle. A few hours after they leave the house explodes. Okay, not exactly 'explodes' but it bursts into flames, a wall implodes and Alex only just makes it out with his life. But just when everything starts to get normal again, like after an hour or so, the world begins to explode, for real this time....

Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

Image
Hey everyone, just finished reading Poison Princess by Kresley Cole, so here's what I think. To be completely honest I only read this book because by chance I picked up the second book in the series and it looked, by what I read on the back, to be pretty promising. The first book didn't seem as promising, but as we all know one cannot simple start the second book without first reading the first. The book starts out from a persons point of view as Evie comes to his house after an event caused most of the world to be killed or turned into zombies who search for anything to drink in the barren landscapes, even blood. Flash back to almost a year ago and we meet Evie, a girl living in Louisiana who has just been let out of an asylum because of her hallucinations she experiences. She is going back to school for the first time in a few years where she hopes to strengthen the relationship she has between her boyfriend and her best friend. But there is a new boy, Jack, who is from...

Partials by Dan Wells

Image
Hey everyone! Just finished reading Partials by Dan Wells, a book recommended to me by my best book buddy who always finds me good next series to read. All in all it was a good book with a good story line and a fantastic lead up. Meet Kira, a new medic in the time after the war with the partials where a group of man made robots that had human DNA released a deadly virus called RM virus that killed almost all of humanity. Kira and a small group of other survivors have created their own civilisation where they try to find the cure for the virus as it kills any new born child. So basically, in the last 11 years since the partial war ended and all the partials disappeared, not a single child has been born. Kira is 16 and is working hard to find the cure before the pregnancy age, the age that all woman must start getting pregnant and remain pregnant as long as they can, is dropped from 18 to 16. But after her best friend, who is basically her sister, gets pregnant, and she realises...
