Lost Amid the Cosmic Storm by Mike Phillips

Image
Good evening everyone. This review is coming a little late since I had to work a double shift today. In the past I have reviewed another book by Mike Phillips, which you can also find in my blog. I liked the last book he wrote but this one blew me out of the water. Now, let me make this clear, this book isn't out just yet. This is an ARC that I received. I will send out another post announcing when the book actually comes out with a link to the page where you can buy the book if you are interested. If you are looking for a book that explores the lengths humans will go to follow their beliefs, through an unknown landscape with endless amounts of danger, this is the book for you. Basically, if you love adventure fantasy books this is a great read. Mr. Phillips has a strong voice in a way that I don't feel the author in the story at all. It flows so smoothly that it doesn't feel like you are reading it at all. After a few chapters I really got into the story and I read t...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Alan Dean Foster

Image
Hey everyone I hope you are all having a great Monday!  A couple weeks ago I decided that I would finally watch the new Star Wars, which came out in theatres long enough ago that it is coming out on DVD. And I truly enjoyed the movie. After finishing it I went straight to Kobo.com and bought the book (as well as reading the original script to the movie). Since I am a bit behind on my reading due to work and personal matters I thought I would do a quick review for this book. The book is a novelization of the movie but I have often read novelizations in the past and they have been pretty good. I found that in this book there was more information given to stories than was portrayed in the movie. This is probably because Alan Dean Foster read the original script (see, my crazy is more research than anything else) where he would have seen the stories that were cut from the final product. There is also something about being able to see the inner thinkings of each character that adds ...

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I am on a path it seems writing reviews for books that have become and/or are becoming movies. I never really watch the movies so I can't give a proper comparison for both but I can  give you a proper review for the book. I literally knew nothing of this book going into it so I didn't have hopes for it to be anything besides another teen book. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the first half of the book. Let me tell you a bit about it: Cassie lives an awful life as far as she is concerned. An alien race she calls the 'Others' have come to Earth and killed off almost all of humanity in a series of 4 waves. The 1st wave knocked out all electronic devices including cars, killing only a few hundred thousand people world wide. The 2nd wave sent a tsunami that killed everyone living in coastal cities. The 3rd wave was a disease that wiped out 90% of Earth's population leaving only those who were na...

The Martian by Andy Weir (As Recommended by Anna)

Image
Good morning everyone. I hope you are having a good day. My old roommate recommended this book to me and since it recently became a movie (which I haven't seen) I figured I would give it a read. As always the biggest mistake I made going into this book was getting my hopes up. I partially blame Anna for this since she gave it a 5 star rating and said it was amazing. I think she just likes messing with me. I'm sure many of you have either seen the movie or read the book but I will tell you about it anyway: WARNING, THIS BOOK AND THIS DESCRIPTION FEATURE VULGAR LANGUAGE! Mark is fucked. Don't freak out, he tells you this in the first sentence. How messed up is he? Well, he is stuck on Mars and no one knows he is alive. So yeah he's pretty fucked up. But fucked as he is he isn't out of the game... not by a long shot. With his experience in engineering and botany (plant science in case I spell it wrong) he will try to stay alive for about 4 years until the next ...

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

"42" Good morning everybody. Summer is almost here so I hope everyone is in good spirits. Today I decided to read an old classic. The book wasn't overly long so I didn't have any trouble finishing it in record time. But my God was this a weird book if I ever did read one. I have never seen the movie but I have heard many weird things about the book/movie over the years. Since the book was relatively cheap at a local bookstore I thought I would pick it up and give it a go. It is one of those strange classics that everyone knows about after all. Arthur Dent is having a really really bad day. First the ministry has decided to tear his house down whether or not he is in it. But that is only the beginning of things. When his friend Ford shows up to take him to the bar, insisting that he drink 3 pints of beer in under ten minutes, Arthur learns that losing his house might be the least of his worries.  Within minutes the Earth has been destroyed and Ford and Arthur...

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

"The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don't got nothing much to say. About anything." "Need to poo, Todd." "Shut up, Manchee." "Poo. Poo, Todd." (Page 1) Hello everyone and Happy Monday! This week I read the Knife of Never Letting Go, which was recommended to me by my roommate, who is rereading the series right now. I put my favourite quote from the book above, which I loved so much, and it is something I am going to try to do from now on to give you a better feel about what the book will be like. I liked this book because it had a different feel and concept to it that many other books don't have. Every step of the way I was confused, a little frustrated, but overall I think it turned out well. A bit of a cliff hanger at the end, but that is to be expected in most trilogies I guess. Todd lives in the New World, a planet that was migrated to by humans not long ago. The one thing that is different ...
